HISTORY OF THE CHARMERS
It was after the installation of the Broward County Chapter in 1957 that the Palm Beach County Charmettes began to refer to our spouses and significant others as CHARMERS. However it wasn’t until 1969 when Herman E. Boynton (the first Charmer) accompanied his spouse, Charmette Geneva B. Boynton, to the installation of the Leon County Chapter that the idea blossomed.
Herman was so excited about how well the men of the Leon County Chapter treated him and the other men who attended, that he came back to West Palm Beach and told our local guys about it. He suggested that our Palm Beach County group get together and Eddie Rodgers became the first Coordinator. Thus, the Charmers were formed. They were loosely organized as a support group for The Charmettes, Inc. and remain so to this day.
The next year, Moses B. Stubbs, Jr., became the Coordinator and began to contact men from the other chapters to plan activities at our conventions for men while we were in meetings. Subsequent to Moses chairing this activity, Willie S. Singleton took over and became the contact person for many years.
Sometime during the mid-eighties, Rayfield Russell of the Leon County Chapter, obtained a Charter for the Charmers from the State of Florida. The men of the other chapters were not in favor of this and did not want a separate legal organization. After a few years, the charter expired and was not renewed.
In the early nineties, Willie Singleton worked in conjunction with Bobby Scott of the Hillsborough County Chapter to coordinate Charmer activities. Later they were joined by Earl Haugabook of the Hillsborough County Chapter and Curtis Miranda of the Duval County Chapter. Both Scott and Miranda are continuing this practice.
The Charmers continue to provide supporting services to the ladies of their chapters and has adopted our National Project (Cancer Research and Education) as their own. Each year at convention, they contribute to our donations to the Howard University Cancer Research Center.
